The Good Doctor Season 6 Episode 16 Recap

A few years ago, Dr. Park and Dr. Shaun came across a seriously injured girl and boy while returning home from dinner. Shaun had to amputate the boy’s left hand because he got thrown out of the car in the accident for not wearing a seatbelt. Shaun gets sued by the boy for that ‘malpractice.’

Shaun goes to Janet Stewart, the malpractice lawyer with Dr. Glassman and Dr. Park. He explains that the plaintiff’s left hand was severely damaged and had to be amputated before the toxins reached his heart.

Park warned him about the ambulance being only two minutes away. But, it would be too late, and the ambulance does not carry every piece of equipment, as per Shaun. Joni prioritizes small details that others do not. It is how she makes Shaun question his decision to amputate the plaintiff’s hand. Thus, Shaun must get too careful while speaking in court.

Janet Stewart suggests settlement, but Shaun refuses as he must stay under supervision for six months through this method. On the other hand, his license would be at risk if he went for the trial. However, Shaun chooses Joni as his lawyer when he comes across her skills due to her OCD.

Joni got OCD after her father’s death in her childhood. But Janet saved her family from getting torn apart. Joni never tried to get her OCD treated. Thus, it affected her career and personal life. However, it also acts as her strength occasionally.

Shaun empathizes with Joni because she has suffered more and has lacked support from her senior. She messes in the first trial and gets disappointed. On the one hand, her senior berates her. On the other hand, Shaun comforts her by saying that she is not the only one to have problems.

This time she gets confident. Her mentor asks her to focus on her key skills and pay attention to minute details. Finally, she wins the suit. This special episode of Season 6 teaches us to look at our strengths despite several differences.

Our Review

Dr. Shaun gets sued by an angry patient from the past. This time, it is not Powell or Limp. Otherwise, their issues could have got too personal. Thus, this episode focuses on Shaun and Joni with no loss of important characters.

The scene where Shaun and Park are suddenly shown in the car to depict the past right from the current moment is awesome. Most time was dedicated to introducing new characters in the episode.

Glassman has played the same role in Shaun’s life as the mentor did for Joni. Glassman trusted Janet Stewart for legal bits of advice. But, their relationship was professional. He existed only to take Shaun to Janet and walk away in this episode. We wanted to see him doing something more for Shaun.

We can make several reasons for Joni working for Janet. Janet took Joni and her sister’s case in the past. Joni considers Janet as her mentor. Suddenly, during an ongoing conversation, Joni hears her inner voice loudly suppressing the other noises. It is related to the real-life issues faced by some people.

It is good to see Janet helping Joni though Joni stole her client (it is Shaun). Similarly, Joni has played the character of a person with OCD well. Park only appeared in the court, gave his testimony, and went away. He should have continued to appear in more scenes.

Joni should have talked about her issues with the squeaky chair with the judge before the trial. It would be a part of the accommodations.
