Game of Thrones had plenty of heartbreaking deaths throughout its eight seasons, and one of the most tragic character demises was made worse just three years later by a hit war movie. Some of the most memorable, devastating moments in Game of Thrones involve the deaths of major characters. From the Starks’ murders at the Red Wedding in season 3 to Hodor’s gut-wrenching “hold the door” demise in season 6, the show’s big deaths have gone down as memorable events in TV pop culture history. With such a big ensemble cast, some Game of Thrones deaths would even gain additional perspective after the fact through their actors’ fates in other movies and shows.

One of these would be the death of King Tommen Baratheon in Game of Thrones season 6. Tommen had largely been a background character with just a few appearances throughout Game of Thrones’ first three seasons, with his role being elevated (and recast with Dean-Charles Chapman) in season 4 when he succeeded his brother Joffrey on the Iron Throne. However, following Margaery’s death in Game of Thrones’ season 6 finale, Tommen died by suicide when he heartbreakingly leapt from his bedroom window. To make it worse, Dean-Charles Chapman’s biggest movie three years later wouldn’t give him a better fate.

Chapman's more innocent characters suffer the cruelest fates

After already seeing Tommen suffer a horrible fate in Game of Thrones season 6, Dean-Charles Chapman’s biggest follow-up role would give him another gut-wrenching demise. Chapman’s 1917 movie character Tom Blake was one of the film’s two main protagonists, though he would only last halfway through the WWI plot before being killed by a German soldier. Blake’s death was devastating after seeing his pacifist and kind nature throughout the cruelty of war, and its impact hit harder due to Chapman’s previous role, as it felt like experiencing Tommen’s demise all over again.

Additionally, the connections between 1917 and Game of Thrones went further with the casting for the Blake brothers. 1917’s ending revealed that Tom Blake’s older brother was played by Richard Madden, who portrayed Robb Stark in Game of Thrones. Both Madden and Chapman’s Game of Thrones characters suffered unspeakable fates, with the two also being among the most sympathetic characters despite coming from the warring families of the Starks and Lannisters. Additionally, Chapman played a different dead Lannister character, Martyn, in Game of Thrones season 2, with Madden’s Robb Stark executing one of his own men for killing the innocent young boy.

Sadly, Game of Thrones and 1917 aren’t the only projects where Dean-Charles Chapman’s character doesn’t survive. Chapman also appeared as Thomas in Netflix’s 2019 historical movie The King, which saw historical character die while fighting in Wales. As a reversal of expectations, Chapman’s character Adam was thought to be dead before the twist ending revealed he was alive in Before I Go to Sleep. Furthermore, Chapman’s characters in The White Queen and Into the Badlands suffer grim fates, which is quite a bleak character streak for the actor with only nine movies and 11 TV show appearances so far.
