What's Hot

I've recently moved house, got all the important thing set up: dedicated music room with guitars and amps, stereo and internet/computer.
At some point though I have the delights of having to buy a new television, I'm told that the house I'm in has a satellite and reception via aerial isn't that good so I need to get a tv with freesat (I'm not paying for Sky). I've got an old sky box and know that if I buy a new viewing card then that should ask as a freesat box for me so the next question is....
What tv do I buy???
If it's got freeview built in to it, can I just plug the sky box in anyway and the freesat will override it, or will I have some peculiar mish mash of freeview and freesat?
I don't really want to run additional speakers with it so a half decent built in dolby sound system would be a plus.
I once saw some analogue to digital converter that would let you connect a 5.1 computer speaker setup to the tv, does such a thing still exist just in case i can't get a decent sound?
Budget, not oodles - lets say £350. Minimum 32" screen.
Suggestions on a postcard please.

freeview and Sky run from 2 totally different inputs so no chance of a mish mash
even half decent sound in modern tvs is not possible so you be looking at a soundbar at the very least.

in three rooms we've have had two Sony's, two Philips a Samsungand two Panasonics, for picture quality the latter gets my vote.

Richer sounds have the best prices and warranties, and don't lie the way the high street shops do
I used to always buy Panasonic, but now plasma is going, Samsung & LG have been the latest ones for me
to use free sat, you'll need a dual LNB or some splitter if you want to carry on using sky as well. I thought all the freesat channels were on sky anyway. Easier for you to just plug the sat cable into the freesat TV
For terrestrial, there is freeview and freeview HD, make sure you get the latter

There are a couple of channels not on freesat (e.g. Dave) so you'll still have to plug the aerial into the TV.
So Freesat on HDMI 1 and freeview on the TV channel.
Do you have a Hi-Fi in the same room? Why not just move the Stereo speakers either side of the TV.
TV though a decent stereo is still far better than a rubbish 5.1 system or one of those virtual surround sound systems.
Now you may get a fuller sound by using the Stereo outs from the TV to power a subwoofer (which you can hide out of the way) and use the TV for Mids and treble.

Would agree on the sound. Modern TVs are so thin they just can't get decent speakers in them. I don't think they even try anymore. They just expect you to plug it into a soundbar or a HiFi system if you care about sound quality.
They don't come with conventional analogue phono outputs for the audio either - it's all digital now. If you've got an older HiFi amp you'll have to get a digital to analogue converter. The one I got cost about £38.
I have to say that my HiFi still sounds better than the sound bar that my brother in law spent £250 on.
