Oscar J. Steinhauser, 91, of Harrisonburg, died on Friday, April 4, 2003, at Oak Lea Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since February of 2000.

He was born Dec. 16, 1911, in Jasper, Ind., and was the son of the late August and Bernardine Julkenbeck Steinhauser.

Mr. Steinhauser served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He retired in 1973 after 42 years working for the Federal Government with the Department of Commerce and the Department of Transportation.

He moved to Harrisonburg in 1974, coming from Arlington, and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the N.A.R.F.E. He was an avid sports fan, Redskins fan, and enjoyed playing tennis earlier in his life as well as many other sports.

On June 26, 1939, he married Marie Calvey, who preceded him in death on June 29, 2001.

Mr. Steinhauser is survived by one daughter, Karen S. Ryman and husband, Randy, of Harrisonburg; one sister, Louise Steinhauser of Evansville, Ind.; two grandchildren, Bev Mines and husband, Wes, of Elkton, and Wes Ryman and fiancée, Stacey Bowles of Harrisonburg; five nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Father Ken Wood. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8 at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The casket will be closed.

Memorial donations may be made to V.M.R.C., 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Va., 22802.
