i'm frank mallicoat. here's what's happening. police and the california highway patrol are clearing out a pro-palestinian protest on the campus at uc santa cruz. police got to campus after midnight, declared the gathering unlawful, and gave the protesters a dispersal order. ktvu is mark sayer joins us live in santa cruz with the very latest. mark, good afternoon. >> well, good afternoon, frank. while those major operations are order are over, a spirited and loud protest continues here with protesters on one side and california highway patrol officers on the other side. let me step out of the way and show you what's happening right now. you're looking perpendicular to the main entrance of campus. i counted at least 60 california patrol. california highway patrol officers on one side. it's hard to estimate the size of the protest, but it could be close to 100 people at this point. it is all been peaceful for the time we have been here leading into the noon hour. though the pro-palestinian protesters are chanting the highway patrol is simply making

sure the entrance to campus remains open and they're taking no action. let's pan to the right here. briefly, i want to show you the main entrance to uc santa cruz. this is where the main incident occurred overnight, where pro-palestinian protesters had tents and camp set up, and they were blocking entrances to campus. so let's show you the video from early this morning. this was the scene. the highway patrol moved in to break down the encampments that were actually blocking access to campus. at around 1 a.m, other local and regional law enforcement agencies also helped that effort, some coming from as far away as san francisco students, some who say they were feeling threatened, tried to defend themselves by holding barricades up, linking arms, trying to make it harder to be separated. and the protesters do report there was some pushing and shoving. police were carrying zip ties as they detained the protesters. and we did this morning, get this statement from university of california at santa cruz. it says it is imperative that we restore full access to our campus and end other unlawful and unsafe actions as demonstrators continue to disrupt campus operations and

threaten safety, even delaying access of emergency vehicles, it was impossible to do so without law enforcement. intervention. now, those that did not comply with the orders from the highway patrol overnight were indeed put on busses, and they were taken to jail. we have reached out to both the santa cruz office of the highway patrol and also to the university administration to try to get a handle on how many people were arrested and at this point, we do not have that information. all we know is that people were arrested from the protest early this morning, put on busses and taken to jail. we're going to remain here throughout the afternoon, keep an eye on this protest. and of course, we'll have those later details for you coming up later on this afternoon. so, frank, that's the story right now from uc santa cruz. i'm mark sayer reporting live back to you all right, mark, we thank you for that. >> president biden this morning spoke about the situation in the middle east as work does continue to secure the release of hostages held by hamas in exchange for a temporary cease fire. president speaking at the white house, said hamas was no

longer capable of carrying out a major terror attack on israel and said it's time for a permanent cease fire in gaza. mr. biden says right now, a temporary six week cease fire is being offered by israel. that would pave the way for negotiations to eventually end the war and begin to rebuild gaza. >> this new proposal has three phases three the first phase would last for six weeks. here's what it would include a full and complete cease fire and withdrawal of israeli forces from all populated areas of gaza. relief of a number of hostages, including women, the elderly, the wounded in exchange for release of hundreds of palestinian prisoners. >> that proposal has been delivered by qatar to hamas. there's no indication yet that hamas will accept the deal, though we have some developing news in the south bay, where a major crash on northbound highway 17 in los gatos caused

delays for hours, a viewer sent in this video, chp says the crash happened just after 7:00 this morning. a metro bus collided with multiple vehicles north of bear creek road. at least four people were injured. one vehicle caught fire. one northbound lane was blocked until crews cleared the accident. about a half hour ago, but traffic does remain extremely heavy over the hill. northbound 17 and the chp is investigating a deadly collision on highway 101 at palo alto. this happened this morning involving a disabled vehicle, according to the chp. the driver of a hyundai suv called authorities after hitting something in the northbound lanes near the san antonio road on ramp. a few minutes later, another vehicle came hit that suv and then a third vehicle. then ran into both of them. driver of the hyundai was outside of the car. he was killed and one of the subsequent collisions. all lanes were blocked for hours during the

morning commute and reopened around 730 this morning. some good news in the city san francisco's anchor brewing company has a new owner, the billionaire founder and ceo of chobani yogurt has purchased the 127 year old san francisco brewery that shut down last july. the new owner bought all of anchor's assets, including the beer's trademark recipe, brewing equipment at the warehouse facility on deharo street and potrero hill campus, says he does plan to preserve the brand's history and heritage and keep the company in the city. price of the sale was not disclosed. paul pelosi took the stand just a short time ago to face the man, who was already convicted in federal court of attacking him with a hammer. he went over the details of the attack. david depape is now in state court facing charges that include attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse. prosecutors thursday called a neurologist who testified 82 year old paul

pelosi may have to deal with injuries he suffered in that attack for the rest of his life. prosecutors also played a one hour police interview with depape following his arrest. at the rate prosecution is presenting its evidence, court observers say this case could go to the jury as soon as early next week. new at noon today, richard allen davis, the man convicted of kidnaping and killing polly glass in 1993, has now been denied a long shot resentencing bid. a santa judge this morning denied davis's petition to overturn his death sentence based on changes to state sentencing laws and moratoriums on executions. davis was not in the courtroom. he's currently in a state prison facility in stockton. after the hearing, polly's father, marc glass, issued a statement thanking the judge for, quote, rightfully denied this latest ridiculous motion in san francisco. there's only five months until the mayor's race,

and we're hearing from more of the candidates about their priorities for the city. many keeping an eye on the focus on children and families. ktvu is alice works gives us more. >> it was on ktvu the four on thursday where mayoral candidate mark farrell provided more details on his plan to address what he calls a child care crisis in the city. farrell is former interim mayor and supervisor. he says he wants every family in san francisco to have access to affordable, high quality child care. >> my proposal for universal child care that i came forward with today is multiple prongs. one is about making sure the space is available so they have child care facilities available throughout every single neighborhood in san francisco. we need to make sure we train workers and have a pipeline of people staffing these child care centers. and then it's about affordability. >> it was back in 2018, voters approved proposition c, a tax on commercial rent. mayor london breed released a statement in

response to farrell's proposal, saying she's prioritizing the city budget to continue to serve early childhood education, including renovation and development of new sites and increasing pay to retain early learning. teachers and parents. we spoke to agree funding for early childhood education is critical. >> it's essential, i actually helped out and volunteered this year teaching inside the first grade classroom because there wasn't enough in the budget to service some students who really needed the help. and so i think that funding and appropriate and keeping the teachers in the schools, because this is where they want to be, it's absolutely crucial. >> other parents have seen the benefits of prop c, especially in helping to retain educators with the high cost of living in the city. >> i do know that where the city is paying bonuses to early childhood education teachers, i don't know what the funding stream for that is, but i know that's been great for the teachers here, that they've been

a little extra bonus that's, you know, on top of their salary from the school that there's something that's paid from the city and that's been helpful in retaining teachers. >> when reached for comment, president of the board of supervisors and mayoral candidate aaron peskin shared he's been a strong proponent who helped pass prop c back in 2018. he's been fighting to get the mayor to release the funds for child care ever since another top candidate, daniel lurie. when contacted by email, indicated these initiatives are not new, stating, our city needs a lot more show and a lot less tell from the people who spent the better part of a decade in city hall and failed to act, according to the children's council of san francisco, families pay an average of 20 to $30,000 a year for child care, and that's why this is a hot topic for this year's mayoral race in november in san francisco, alice wertz ktvu, fox two news and a recent report adds more evidence that american families are having a very tough time affording that child care.

uc santa cruz ktvu james torres saw clashes as it took officers hours to clear that demonstration. >> about one this morning, highway patrol came in, breaking down the encampment at the entrance of uc santa cruz. leave the area. students feeling threatened, tried to defend themselves, holding barricades and linking arms to make it harder to be separated. comes on campus. >> on campus. >> the removal called on by ucsc officials who say they gave protests plenty of warning to leave the area after three days of switching to remote learning. a uc spokesperson says the

santa cruz, i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news a day after becoming the first former president to be convicted on felony charges, donald trump is remaining defiant, says his legal battle is not over yet. >> during a long news conference this morning at trump tower in new york city, trump lashed out at the judge, prosecutors and the verdict in his criminal hush money trial. a jury yesterday found him guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. trump claims it just was not a fair trial, a case where if they can do this to me, they can do this to anyone. >> these are bad people. these are, in many cases, i believe, sick people. it was a rigged trial. we wanted a venue change where our we could have a fair trial. we didn't get it. we wanted a judge change. we wanted a judge that wasn't conflicted. and obviously he didn't do that. >> trump's attorneys say they

video out of san jose shows the moment a man was attacked at a vta platform. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office releasing this video showing what appears to be an unprovoked attack, authorities say. the video shows 26 year old andrew perez repeatedly punching the victim. this happened on the platform of the vta children's discovery museum station in san jose around 1:00 wednesday afternoon. when perez got on to stab went on rather to stab the 45 year old victim repeatedly with an unknown object. the victim is expected to survive but sustained a large cut that required seven staples. perez took off from the vta platform after the attack and barricaded himself inside a home. he was arrested after a standoff with police and is now facing a number of charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. newark police are investigating a smash and grab robbery at a jewelry store. >> 15 guys literally just

started smashing away. >> officials say the robbery happened about 1 p.m. wednesday at bindi jewelers. a large group of armed men smashed the jewelry cases and got away with merchandise. police say several cars with getaway drivers were ready to get the robbers away from that scene of that new park mall. happening today. san francisco police will get an update about a recent officer involved shooting. the virtual town hall, set for 3 p.m, will focus on the shooting that happened last thursday around jennings street and donner avenue. police were called after someone in the neighborhood reported seeing a man with a rifle. sfpd says one officer fired his gun but did not shoot anyone. police say that suspect was injured in their response, but not by gunfire. san francisco's sheriff says his department has suspended using chemical agents during training exercises. that's after gas from a recent drill affected some two dozen students at portola

elementary school. a week ago. sheriff says it happened during a training exercise that was close to the school, which people are exposed to chemical agents and then asked to perform certain functions. the department typically uses older canisters for training, and these may have been 20 years old . >> in this particular case, it was not something out of the ordinary that we do, but it is something now in hindsight that we are reassessing how we do training and moving forward will definitely reassure and make sure that this doesn't happen again. >> sheriff says a large number of canisters were used during the training in a confined environment there. one parent says his child's experienced severe symptoms. >> initially a sore throat, runny nose, burning eyes but then they had post exposure symptoms 24 hours later, which included kind of, vomit, continuous vomiting over the course of like 11 hours, like

every four hours. he was getting sick. >> number parents say they wish they had received better communication from authorities after the incident. and they are now calling for a full restaurant forced to delay its grand opening after thieves broke in and stole thousands of dollars in items less than a week before the restaurant's first guest was served. security camera footage here from inside the new mediterranean style restaurant on gough street in the hayes valley. you can see a group of people dressed in dark colors, wearing hoodies. it happened early tuesday morning, the same day the restaurant was set to have a soft opening. >> you're definitely shocked the first day. >> like you like this happened to you. it just doesn't add up. we are thankful they didn't do any property damage. so it's just inventory. inventory, small wares and tools. as i've said before, this just fuels me. i'm not going to let something like this affect us and because i do believe in a trickle down effect

introduce you to twin sisters out of the south bay, who will compete as a doubles team in the olympics this summer in paris. it's the first time the u.s. has had twins compete in the summer olympics in almost three decades. ktvu claudine wong introduces us to annie and kerry hsu as they chase their dreams. >> if you are having trouble telling these two players apart,

you are not alone. even their competitors struggle. >> for the most part. i think we're usually like in the same like wavelength and like going in the same direction. it's definitely an advantage. like on court also because we look like very similar. so it's probably harder for like the opponent to distinguish, you know, like who's who and like what's their playing style. >> but as they prepare to head to paris for the 2024 olympics, what is clear is that these identical twins should not be underestimated. 24 year old kerry and annie hsu will compete in badminton doubles, and are the first twins to compete on a u.s. summer olympics team since 1996. and it's a run that almost didn't happen. >> yeah, i don't actually know. like, i almost want to call it like a semi-retirement because i feel like that's like almost what it was. >> the two started playing badminton when they were about eight years old, and by the time they were 12, they were winning national titles. >> they were very good in the

us. they were top number one, you know, from the very young. >> by the time they graduated from lee high school in san jose, they were winning on the world stage. but college was also right around the corner. >> the 2017 world university games. and we actually got a bronze medal in doubles, which is like usa's first like medal like ever. and so like we were kind of thinking to ourselves, okay, we're going to uc berkeley and it's going to be like very rigorous. like we kind of don't have time exactly for training. so like, let's end off on like a very high note. >> so they played less and less and eventually not at all. they graduated from uc berkeley, got jobs. but then in 2022, they started to wonder if it was too late to chase a dream. >> we started talking about the olympics because the tokyo olympics had just passed in like august, and we were like, is it something you still want? and then she was like, yeah. and then i was like, okay, me too. like, do you think it's too late? no. okay. and then we're

like, okay, like, let's try for it. >> they left their jobs and called their coach, harry tan. >> olympic is always my dream to . that's why we have the dream. so then we say, hey, you know, let's go for it. right? so when they start getting into it the first three months, it was really, really tough for them over the last 18 months, they worked traveling around the globe, fighting their way back in between competitions, taking time to enjoy the journey with food and fun. >> then in april, they qualified for the olympics. i think like the first emotion that we felt was obviously joy, like really happy that we were able to pull through, and then the second one was like probably relief in that, like knowing all the sacrifices that like you made were like worth it. >> they still, a little bit distant compared to the top 15 in the world. but then everybody else, they are catching up so closely. >> are you surprised at how

closing its doors just as the summer travel season gets underway. hotel de anza says it's doing this because of maintenance issues. lamonica peters talked with people who had to find other accommodations. closing down hotel de anza is obviously a necessity to keep visitors safe, but we encourage all visitors to still come out to san jose. >> hotel de anza posted a notice on its website notifying customers about unexpected maintenance, causing them to suspend normal operations until june 16th. hotel management released a statement saying, in
