LIVE NOW

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Live: The outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections presents a sobering reality for the BJP, which appears to fall short of the majority mark of 272, despite the ruling alliance's readiness to form the government. This contrasts sharply with the BJP's dominant performance in 2019 when it secured 303 seats independently, with the NDA crossing the 350-seat threshold.

Significant setbacks for the BJP are evident in its traditional strongholds of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Conversely, the party has made notable strides in states like Odisha, Telangana, and Kerala, indicating a mixed electoral performance across different regions.

On the other hand, the unified opposition bloc under the banner of INDIA, driven by their collective resistance against the BJP and its policies, has secured leads in approximately 230 seats. This coalition has achieved substantial gains in various states, posing a formidable challenge to the BJP's dominance.

Meanwhile, the Congress, which faced successive defeats in the past two Lok Sabha elections, appears poised to surpass the 100-seat mark. This resurgence signals a potential revival for the party after a period of electoral setbacks.

As the electoral landscape continues to evolve, stay tuned to TOI for the latest updates and developments on the unfolding political scenario.

LS election results 2024: BJP concedes defeat in Ayodhya, where PM Modi opened grand Ram temple

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a significant setback in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the Ayodhya constituency, where the inauguration of a grand Hindu temple by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just months earlier was seen as a crucial event for the party's electoral prospects.

Despite the high-profile temple inauguration dedicated to Lord Ram, the BJP appears to be facing heavy losses in the key state. The opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress are leading in more than half of Uttar Pradesh's 80 seats, including in Ayodhya city within the Faizabad constituency.

The temple inauguration fulfilled a longstanding promise by the BJP, which had made it a centerpiece of its campaign rhetoric during the extensive election period in the Hindu-majority nation. However, despite the symbolic significance of the temple, voters seem to have prioritized concerns such as unemployment and high inflation over religious issues.

The incumbent BJP lawmaker from Faizabad, Lallu Singh, expressed regret to party workers, acknowledging the party's failure to secure victory in the Ayodhya parliamentary region. Singh had been elected to parliament twice before, in 2014 and 2019, during previous BJP electoral successes in Uttar Pradesh.

However, according to the latest trends from the Election Commission, there has been a reduction in the BJP's seat count in the state, raising questions about the effectiveness of religious appeals in the face of pressing economic concerns. Some analysts suggest that voters were dissatisfied with the BJP's performance on developmental issues, despite the significance of the temple inauguration.

Local sentiments in Ayodhya also reflect a mix of satisfaction with the temple's construction and frustration over issues such as inadequate compensation for businesses affected by the redevelopment of the area. This suggests that voters are not solely swayed by religious or caste-based politics but also prioritize tangible development and economic progress.

The construction of the Ram temple followed a decades-long dispute over the site, culminating in a Supreme Court order for its construction after the demolition of a historic mosque in 1992. While the temple's completion was a significant event, its electoral impact underscores the complexity of voter priorities in contemporary India.

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi secured victory in the Jalandhar constituency of Punjab, dealing a significant blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Channi clinched the seat by a comfortable margin of 1,75,993 votes, as per data from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Channi faced competition from BJP candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu. The Congress candidate amassed a total of 3,90,053 votes, surpassing Rinku's 2,14,060 votes and Tinu's 2,08,889 votes.

The polling in Jalandhar took place in the final phase of the Lok Sabha polls on June 1, with a voter turnout recorded at 59.70%. In Punjab, the Congress is currently leading on seven seats, while the AAP is ahead on three seats, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is leading on one seat, according to ECI data.

On the national level, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading on 293 seats, while the INDIA bloc is ahead on 233 seats out of a total of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies. The BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term in power, while the opposition under the INDIA bloc seeks to challenge its dominance.

Exit polls had predicted a strong showing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP-led NDA, with some projections indicating a two-thirds majority. However, the Congress and its allies dismissed these predictions as "orchestrated" and expressed confidence in forming the next government at the Centre.

Amid tight security measures, the counting of votes for over 8,000 candidates proceeded smoothly. The BJP's victory in the Surat Lok Sabha seat was announced even before the completion of the vote counting process.

The Lok Sabha elections, spanning seven phases from April 19 to June 1, witnessed extensive participation across the country.

According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission of India, Union Minister Smriti Irani trails on the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, with Congress' Kishori Lal Sharma leading by a substantial margin of 1,25,159 votes. Lok Sabha election results 2024 | Maharashtra Congress on LS results: Rahul Gandhi's two Yatras 'heralded change in India'

Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole credited the party's impressive performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to the efforts of senior leader Rahul Gandhi and the impactful Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatras.

He emphasized that the momentum for change began with Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatras (BJNY), which traversed across the length and breadth of India, garnering significant support from the masses.

Patole highlighted that the electorate has decisively rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party's divisive and destructive politics through the peaceful exercise of their voting power. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrogance has been shattered, marking a victory for the common people and political workers who diligently worked towards this outcome.

The Maharashtra Congress President emphasized that the widespread belief that there was no alternative to Modi has been effectively disproven by the Lok Sabha election results. He stressed that the democratic expression of the people's will has demonstrated that no individual is above the citizens in a democracy.

Furthermore, Patole reiterated the significance of this outcome as a lesson for those responsible for forming the "unconstitutional government" in Maharashtra, which goes against the principles advocated by leaders such as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

His remarks come in the wake of the Maha Vikas Aghadi's remarkable performance, securing leads or victories in 29 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats, compared to 18 leads or wins for the ruling Mahayuti, along with one Independent candidate emerging victorious in Sangli.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: 'Baahubali' moment for Stalin as DMK-led combine poised for massive win

The Coimbatore rally in April, where Chief Minister M K Stalin and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed the public, left a lasting impact, with Stalin likening the turnout to the blockbuster movie "Baahubali" and declaring that the "total BJP was trumped" by that single event.

The streak of electoral success for the DMK and its allies began in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and continued through subsequent civic polls and the 2021 Assembly elections, culminating in a resounding victory for the Dravidian party and its partners.

Stalin's leadership was instrumental in shaping the election campaign, with a focus on themes of social justice and welfare schemes. He emphasized the importance of voting out the BJP to protect social justice and welfare initiatives, warning that a return of PM Modi's government would endanger these principles.

Slogans highlighting PM Modi's infrequent visits to the state, the burdensome GST regime, and allegations of an undisclosed alliance between AIADMK and BJP resonated with voters. Additionally, welfare schemes like financial assistance for women, free breakfast for school children, and fare-free bus travel for women bolstered support for the ruling party.

Stalin adeptly countered BJP's attacks, dismissing accusations of family rule and challenging Modi's record on issues like the Madurai AIIMS project and flood relief for Tamil Nadu. He also criticized BJP's handling of the Katchatheevu issue and accused Modi of failing to confront Sri Lanka and China.

The DMK's election song, "Stalin Kural, Namakkagave, Nammai Kaakkave," reflected a fighting spirit and rallied support against the BJP. Stalin framed the 2024 LS polls as a "second freedom movement" and portrayed the election as a choice between continuing BJP rule or ushering in change.

After a decade in opposition, Stalin's leadership guided the DMK to a significant victory in the 2021 Assembly elections, solidifying his position as a formidable political force in Tamil Nadu.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: 'Miracle was imminent', says Suresh Gopi after BJP's historic Lok Sabha victory in Kerala

Actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi expressed his jubilation over the historic win poised in the parliamentary seat of Thrissur, emphasizing the significance of the BJP's breakthrough in Kerala, according to trends announced by the Election Commission on Tuesday in the counting of votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

"What was very impossible became gloriously possible," said the actor who contested from the seat for the second time after losing in the last general elections in 2019.

Gopi attributed his victory to the support of the "truly secular voters" of Thrissur, stating that despite attempts to divert their allegiance from the BJP, divine intervention guided them on the right path.

"Attempts were made to mislead the voters but God led them on the correct path to accept my party through me ...even if some of you feel that this is a miracle, this miracle was imminent...The victory is due to people's blessings. I bow down to the truly secular voters of Thrissur who made this victory possible," the actor said.

Expressing his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gopi declared his commitment to working for the betterment of Kerala as a whole.

"Narendra Modi is my political God. ..I am not believing in just a manifesto...I will work for the whole Kerala...I will work as Kerala MP," he said.

The 65-year-old actor exuded excitement over his victory, describing it as the culmination of years of emotional investment in his constituency. He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of BJP workers and volunteers in his election campaign.

"I am in totally an ecstatic mood. What was very impossible became gloriously possible...it was not a 62-day campaign process, it was an emotional carriage for the past 7 years...I work for Kerala as a whole. My first pick will be to have AIIMS," Gopi said.

Suresh Gopi was leading with 400,706 votes in the Thrissur constituency, maintaining a margin of 73,091 votes over his closest rival, V S Sunil Kumar of the CPI, and Congress' Muraleedharan of the Congress who polled 319,560 votes, as per data on the poll body's website at 2 pm.

The BJP's success in Kerala marks a significant milestone, particularly considering the party's previous struggles to make inroads in the state. With the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP crossing the majority mark in early leads and the INDIA bloc surging above 200, the Lok Sabha elections present a paradigm shift in the political landscape, defying all exit poll predictions.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: 'Victory of Rahul ji's ideologies', says Digvijay Singh as INDIA bloc leads in 200-plus seats in Lok Sabha polls

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Digvijay Singh hailed the latest trends showing the INDIA bloc leading in 200-plus seats in the Lok Sabha polls, attributing it to the commitment of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to his ideologies.

"I would like to congratulate Mallikarjun Khargeji, under whose leadership we fought the elections. It is the victory of Rahulji's commitment to his ideologies. It is now apparent that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not get a clear majority, and it would lead to inner conflicts among them," Singh said while speaking to reporters in Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh.

"As far as Rajgarh is concerned, the counting is halfway done. Let's see now," he added.

In Rajgarh, Singh is contesting against BJP's Rodmal Nagar. The latest trends by the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed Nagar leading by 1,10,036 votes while Singh was trailing behind.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP is ahead in 293 seats, while the INDIA bloc is leading in 233 seats, indicating significant gains for the latter. The Congress, which won merely 52 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, is currently leading in 95 seats, while the BJP is ahead in 234 seats.

The BJP-led NDA appears far from its target of "400 Paar," with the BJP falling short of a simple majority in Lok Sabha, according to the latest trends. The BJP-led NDA, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, fought the Lok Sabha elections for a third straight term in office.

Lok Sabha polls 2024: Six independent candidates on way to victory

Only six independent candidates appear to be on track for victory in the Lok Sabha polls this time, despite nearly half of the over 8,000 candidates contesting without any party affiliation.

Among them, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, stands out as a giant slayer, leading against J&K National Conference leader Omar Abdullah with a margin of over 1,86,000 votes.

Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, son of Beant Singh, one of the two assassins of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, contested as an independent candidate from Faridkot in Punjab. He leads against his nearest rival Karamjit Singh Anmol of the Aam Aadmi Party with a margin of over 66,000 votes. Singh had previously contested elections in 2014 and 2019 without success.

Meanwhile, radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, is leading in Punjab's Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat over the Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira. Amritpal, currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act, contested as an Independent.

In Maharashtra's Sangli, Vishal Prakashbapu Patil, a Congress rebel who contested as an Independent after Shiv Sena (UBT) fielded a candidate from the seat, leads with a margin of over 93,000 votes. He is the grandson of former Maharashtra chief minister Vasantdada Patil.

The other Independent candidates on track for victory are Mohammad Haneefa Jan from Ladakh, who resigned from the National Conference, and Patel Umeshbhai Babubhai from Daman & Diu.

Despite their prominence in this election, data show a decline in voter trust in independent candidates over the years. Since 1991, over 99 percent of them have lost their deposits.

In 2019, only four Independent candidates emerged victorious out of more than 8,000 contesting polls, with over 99.6 percent losing their deposits.

Historically, the number of winning Independent candidates has decreased from over six percent in 1951 to around 0.11 percent in 2019, reflecting a shifting electoral landscape.

Congress on course to boost Lok Sabha seats tally in Karnataka

The Congress party has made significant gains in Karnataka, as the latest counting trends indicate that the ruling party is set to increase its Lok Sabha seats tally to 10. This marks a shift in the political landscape, with the BJP losing ground in the state.According to Election Commission officials, the BJP is currently leading in 16 seats, a notable decrease from the 25 seats it secured in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The party's NDA partner, JD(S), is projected to emerge victorious in two constituencies.Despite the Congress's resounding success in the assembly elections held in May last year, where it faced off against the BJP and the JD(S) in a three-way contest, the ruling party appears to have fallen short of its expectations in the recent polls. The party had hoped to secure at least 15 seats but seems to have missed the mark. The Congress had heavily relied on the five guarantee schemes it had introduced in the state as part of its campaign strategy. In the 2019 general elections, the grand old party had managed to win only one out of the total 28 seats in Karnataka. Karnataka holds significant importance for the BJP in South India, as it is the only state in the region where the party has previously held power.
