Brubaker - Susie B

., daughter of the late Christian and Lizzie(Brubaker) Charles, was born July 20, 1875; died, afterone year's illness, Nov. 10, 1937; aged 62 y. 3 m. 10 d. Besidesher husband (Jacob L. Brubaker) she is survived by 4 brothers(David B., Christian B., Amos B., and Abram B., all of Manor Tp.),and 1 sister (Sadie B. Miller, Manheim Tp.). Brief services atthe home and further services at Millersville Mennonite Church,conducted by Jacob Hess, Landis Sherter, and Daniel Gish. Text,Job 21:23-26. We believe if she could speak to us today, she wouldsay:
"I found that the crooked path led up to His blessed gloryland,
And that the trials I had endured were only for my own good."

Risser - Beulah, daughter of Ephraim and Mary (Horst)Risser, was born April 18, 1916 near Peabody, Kans.; died at St.Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kans.; aged 21 y. 10 m. 21 d. Deathresulted from peritonitis and complications. She was precededin death by her mother 20 years ago. She is survived by her father,stepmother, 3 sisters (Ella, Ethel, and Margaret) and 1 brother(Eldon). Early in life she united with the Mennonite Church, butby her own acknowledgment she failed to fully yield her life toGod; the pleasures of the world drew her away from the Churcha number of times, until finally her church affiliation was severed.However, the Lord honored the prayers of her family and of othersby sending deep conviction during what proved to be her last sickness.She confessed and repented fully and the Lord gave her the assuranceof salvation. Her earnest request was that her friends shouldbe warned of the folly of sin. Funeral services were held at thehouse and at the Pennsylvania Church, conducted by Paul Erb, EarlBuckwalter, and D.D. Zook.

Yoder - Henry R., son of Amos C. and Emma (Peachey)Yoder, was born near Allensville, Pa., July 19, 1930; died March18, 1938; aged 7 y. 7 m. 29 d. His death came very suddenly asa result of being hit by a motorcycle as he attempted to crossthe highway after getting off the school bus as he was returninghome from school. He leaves his father and mother, 2 brothersand 3 sisters besides a host of friends which his likable dispositionhad won for him. Funeral services were held in the home conductedby Bro. Elmer E. Yoder and in the Allensville Mennonite Churchconducted by Bro. Joshua B. Zook assisted by Bro. Elmer E. Yoder.
"Ere sin could blight or sorrow fade, death timely came,with friendly care,
The opening bud to Heaven conveyed, and bade it bloom foreverthere."

Schrock - Dale Daniel, son of Alvin J. and Mary S. Schrock,fell asleep in Jesus, after a brief illness, March 26, 1938, aged8 y. 1 m. 25 d. He is survived by his father, mother, 3 sistersand 3 brothers (Mrs. Paul Winkler, Laverne, Mary Louise, Donald,Dean, and Darrel), grandfather (Daniel Ramseyer), grandmother(Mrs. Fannie Plank), 8 uncles and aunts, 18 cousins, and manyother relatives. Dale was always willing to help in the dutiesassigned to him, and with a glad heart accomplished his work.He was very much interested in Sunday school work, with the exceptionof one Sunday, during his last illness. Funeral services wereconducted by Brethren J.N. Smucker and J.S. Gerig. Interment inOak Grove Cemetery near Smithville, O.

Harrison - Ronald Dean, son of Wayne and Erma Harrison,was born in Holmesville, Ohio, Aug. 13, 1931; died in the Children'sHospital, Akron, Ohio, March 18, 1938. He was much interestedas his young and tender life began to unfold itself, and to realizethat a loving, heavenly Father was over him to bless and keep.He had his daily devotion with his God as he knew Him, and didnot forget to return thanks for the blessings of each day. ButGod in His wisdom, who doeth all things well, came and called"Ronald," and transplanted him into that beautiful homeabove to enjoy the eternal fellowship with Jesus and the HolyAngels; to shine as one of His jewels; awaiting the coming offather, mother, and brother, Dwight Eugene. He is also survivedby his 4 grandparents, 11 aunts and uncles, 15 cousins, with manyother near relatives. Services were conducted by the brethrenI.W. Royer and J.S. Gerig.

So He leads their tender feet into pastures green and sweet."

Zimmerman - Philip J., son of John and Catherine Zimmermanwas born July 1, 1868, near Kalona, Ia.; after a brief illnesshe departed this life March 4, 1938, at the General Hospital,Enid, Okla.; aged 69 y. 7 m. 26 d. He was united in marriage toAnna Troyer in 1892. He, with his wife and children were amongthe pioneer settlers of Jet, Okla., which has since been theirhome. He leaves his sorrowing wife and the following children:Lizzie, wife of Iri Cooprider, Newton, Kans.; Eva, wife of DanYoder, Harper, Kans.; Floyd, Nash, Okla.; Carrie, wife of RossCooprider, Sedgwick, Kans.; Orie, Wichita, Kans.; and Chris, athome. An infant son preceded him in death. He also leaves 13grandchildren,1 great-grandchild, 3 brothers, and 4 sisters. He united withthe Mennonite Church and remained a faithful Christian until hisdeath. In May, 1899, he was ordained a deacon, in which capacityhe faithfully served the congregation at Jet. He was a lovinghusband and father and will be greatly missed in the home, Church,and community. Funeral services were conducted at the home byBro. Simon Hershberger and at the Jet Mennonite Church by R.M.Weaver and S.C. Miller. Text, 1 Thes. 4:13.

Shank - Loma M. Hostetler was born Nov. 22, 1883, inWayne Co., Ohio; died at the Riverside Hospital, Newport News,Va., on March 19, 1938; aged 54 y. 3 m. 28 d. On Oct. 17, 1907,she was united in marriage to Perry E. Shank of Denbigh, Va.,at which place they have since resided. At an early age she unitedwith the Mennonite church, and remained "faithful until death."Surviving are her husband, 2 children (Elvin of Washington, D.C.,and Malinda Catherine at home - with a little motherless girlwhom they took into their house a few years ago), her father (JonathanK. Hostetler), 2 sisters and 7 brothers (Mrs. Edith Hartzler,Esther, David J., Chauncey, Ammon, Paul, Boyd, Christian and Harryall of Wayne Co., O.), also a large number of nieces and nephews,with many other relatives and friends in Ohio and Virginia. Shehad been troubled almost her entire lifetime with asthma, andsuffered much; but so uncomplaining that her friends were repeatedlyimpressed by her patience and her quiet submission to the willof God. In recent years heart trouble also developed, which, withthe asthma, caused her death. Funeral services were conductedMarch 22 at the home by Bro. Geo. R. Brunk, Jr., and at the churchby Bros. Geo. R. Brunk and Truman Brunk. Text: "Say ye tothe righteous that is shall be well with him." This, withmany other like Scriptures constitutes our comfort and hope. Sowe can truly say, "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath takenaway; blessed be the name of the Lord."

Kropf - Anna, daughter to Bro. and Sister Levi Hostetler,was born March 24, 1866, in Elkhart Co., Ind.; died on March 5,1938, at the home of her youngest daughter, Mae Smucker, nearHarrisburg, Oreg.; aged 71 y. 11 m. 9 d. She accepted Christ asher Saviour in her youth, uniting with the Amish Mennonite Church.She remained faithful until death. At the age of 18 she movedwith her parents to Cass Co., Mo., at which place she was married,Dec. 29, 1885, to Daniel J. Kropf, with whom she shared the joysand sorrows of life for 41 years. She is survived by 6 sons and3 daughters (Frank, Levi, John, Alvin, Orie, Joe, Mrs. John Yoder,Mrs. Orval Smucker, Mrs. Herman Smucker), also 41 grandchildren,3 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers and 5 sisters, besides manyother relatives and friends. Her husband and 3 children precededher to the glory world. She was one of the pioneer members ofthe Mennonite Church on the Pacific Coast, coming to Hubbard,Oreg., with her husband and 2 oldest children in 1889. In 1911she with her family moved to Harrisburg, Oreg., at which timeshe resided at the time of her death. She was always interestedin serving her Master, and in the welfare of her family and ofthe Church. When she could no more labor and toil for her Masterand those she was interested in, her desire was to go home andbe with her Lord. Funeral services were held at the home by JosephSchrock and at the Mennonite church conducted by N.A. Lind, assistedby E.M. Yost. Burial in the Alford Cemetery.

Baker - Jonas Baker was born May 18, 1850; died of gangreneat the home of his sister, Stevensville, Ont., March 13, 1938;aged 78 y. 9 m. 25 d. He leaves 4 brothers (Joseph, Menno, George,and Melvin) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Truman Burger, with whom he lived,and Mrs. Susanna Noyes). He was baptized and received into theMennonite Church in Waterloo, Ont.
Mrs. Melvin Baker

Hess - Abram L. Hess was born Feb. 21, 1863; died athis home in Marion, Pa., Mar. 30, 1938, after an illness of oneyear, nine months of which were spent in bed.; aged 75 y. 1 m.9 d. He was married to Hettie K. Horst who survives with 2 daughters(Lydia Ruth at home and Mrs. Henry S. Baer, Chambersburg, Pa.),and 1 sister (Mrs. H.E. Michaels). He was a member of the MennoniteChurch at Marion for 42 years. Funeral services were conductedin the home by Bro. Norman H. Martin and at the Marion Churchby Brethren Harvey E. Shank and J. Irwin Lehman.

Graber - Susanna Lou, daughter of Amos and Lorene (Nebel)Graber, died very suddenly at her home near Wayland, Iowa, Mondaymorning, Mar. 21, 1938; aged 3 m. 11 d. We cannot understand God'spurpose in taking from our home a treasure so much loved, butwe realize His ways are not our ways, and we look to Him for graceto say, "Thy will be done." Besides her sorrowing parents,she is survived by a sister (Annabelle Charlene), 4 grandparentsand many relatives and friends. An infant brother (John Lamar)preceded her in death. Funeral services were held from the WaylandMennonite Church Mar. 22, by Bros. Simon Gingerich and WillardLeichty.

Strickler - Lydia H., daughter of Hiram N. and Vera(Herr) Strickler, died Jan. 10, 1938; aged 9 y. 10 m. 16 d. Shedied of pneumonia, which developed from the measles. She sufferedalmost a week. She is survived by her bereaved parents, 1 brother(Hiram H.), her maternal grandmother (Mrs. Lydia G. Herr) andher paternal grandfather (Hiram B. Strickler). Funeral serviceswere held privately at her home by Bros. Hiram Kauffman, ChristFrank, and Martin Metzier. Interment in Salunga, Pa., MennoniteCemetery.
"A tiny bud on the Tree of Life, too frail to endure ourworld of strife;
On a bleak and dreary winter day, she spread her wings and flewaway."

Detweiler - Mildred, 2 1/2-months-old daughter of Alvinand Edna (Derstine) Detweiler, Souderton, Pa., died Mar. 22, 1938,after an illness of one day of pneumonia. Surviving besides theparents, are 2 sisters and 1 brother (Ruth, Beulah, and Walter),all at home; also the paternal grandparents, Bro. and Sister IsaacF. Detweiler. Funeral services were held March 24, at the RockhillMennonite Church by Brethren Edwin A. Souder and Alfred A. Detweiler.Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Martin - Florence S., daughter of Jonas Martin, Ephrata,Pa., died at the home of her father and step-mother at the ageof 14 y. 3 m. 15 d., after an illness that lasted over a periodof several months. She was received into church fellowship aboutten days before her departure. Funeral services were held at thehome and in the Weaverland Church March 11, 1938; with BrethrenJohn B. Bucher, Noah W. Hurst, and Amos S. Hurst officiating.The surviving family were the father, her step-mother (Emma RuttMartin), and the following brothers and sisters: Ruth Irene, Jonas*Charles, Clarence, and David. She was a member of the Indiantownchurch. May the Lord bless and use the influence of her shortlife here for the good of others.

Erb - Malinda, daughter of the late Jacob and ElizabethKarcher Erb, after a lingering illness, died Mar. 27, 1938, atthe home of her sister (Mrs. Delton Snider), in Waterloo, Ont.,aged 63 y. 9 m. 2 d. Surviving are two brothers (Anson of Carstairs,Atla., and Addison of Waterloo), and 4 sisters (Mrs. Ira Snyder,and Mrs. Delton Snider, both of Waterloo, Mrs. Addis Cressman,New Hamburg, and Mrs. Joseph Weter, Waterloo). One sister (Mrs.William Knarr of Kitchener) preceded her on March 9, 1938. Whenseventeen years old she was converted during the preaching ofJ.S. Coffman. She united with the Mennonite Church and lived afaithful Christian life. Her testimony during her sickness wasto go and be with Jesus. "For me to live is Christ but todie is gain." Funeral services were conducted by BrethrenJonas Snider and J.B. Martin at the Erb St., Mennonite Church,Waterloo, Ont.

Schmucker - Amanda, daughter of Peter L. and Sarah GingerichWeirich, was born in Newton Co., Ind., June 17, 1889; diedat the home of her daughter near Nappanee, Ind., Mar. 19, 1938;aged 48 y. 9 m. 2 d. Early in life she moved to Nappanee, Ind.,where she resided practically all her life. She was united inmarriage to Jacob S. Schmucker, Nov. 17, 1904. To this union wereborn 4 daughters (Mrs. Iva Slabaugh, Mrs. Sarah Chupp, Mrs. MarthaSchrock, and Lydia Mae Schmucker, all of the vicinity of Nappanee)and 3 sons (Ezra, Edward, and Melvin), all of whom are living.In early life she took Christ as her Saviour and united with theAmish Church, and later transferred her membership to the MennoniteChurch in Nappanee, of which she was a faithful member. She leavesher husband, 7 children 9 grandchildren, father, step-mother,four half-brothers, 1 half-sister, and a host of relatives andfriends. Services were held at the North Main St. Mennonite Churchon March 22 by Homer F. North, Ray F. Yoder, and Levi Mast. Burialin the Weldy Cemetery.

Habel - Maggie, eldest daughter of the late Solomonand Mary Anne (Hostetler) Shantz, was born in WaterlooCo., Ont., April 9, 1878; died at her home in Wilmot, Mar. 21,1938; aged 59 y. 11 m. 12 d. Dec. 8, 1897, she was united in marriageto Conrad Habel who predeceased her over 16 years ago. Survivingare 4 sons and 1 daughter (Clinton of Baden, Lorne of Wilmot,Harry of Buffalo, Roy of Princeton, and Marion - Mrs. WallaceThibideau) on the homestead, 11 grandchildren, 2 brothers and4 sisters, and many other relatives and friends. One son diedin infancy. Sister Habel accepted Christ in her youth and wasa faithful member of the Mennonite Church at Geigers for 43 years,where her presence and help will be missed, but she has gone tobe with her Lord, which is better. She had been in failing healthfor a few years, but a paralytic stroke was the immediate causeof her death. The funeral services were held March 24 from herhome to Geiger's Mennonite Church in Charge of Bros. Moses H.Roth, assisted by the brethren C.C. Cressman and Jonas Snider.Text, Heb. 9:27. She was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Swartzentruber - Valentine Milton, eldest son of Miltonand Savanna (Bender) Swartzentruber, Greenwood, Del., was bornMay 24, 1922; died of facial erysipelas and pneumonia March 16,1938; aged 15 y. 9 m. 22 d. He was sick about 10 days, duringwhich time he patiently bore his great suffering. He acceptedChrist early in life. On the last morning of his life on earthhe requested to be anointed. A touching anointing service washeld, at which time he expressed his faith in the Lord and hisperfect willingness to go if the Lord so willed. The Lord sawfit to take him home. He will be remembered as an obedient childand will be missed more than can be told. He is survived by hisparents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters (Lewis, Elizabeth, Carolyn,Milton, and John), also by quite a number of foster brothers andsisters. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. LeviBontrager, and at the church by Brethren Noah and Eli Swartzentruberand Nevin Bender. The body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
"Death doth hide but not divide;
Thou art but on Christ's other side!
Thou are with Christ and Christ with me;
In Christ united still are we."

Martin - Elizabeth (Reesor) Martin was born in YorkCo., Ont., in December 1859. She was the youngest daughter ofthe late Christian E. Reesor who was for 47 years bishop of whatwas known as the Reesor Church of the Markham district. Aboutthe year 1882 she married Menno, son of Christian Stover. About1900 her husband died. In September, 1904, she married BishopPaul Martin of Waterloo, Co., Ont., and lived with him ten yearsuntil his death. After remaining on his homestead for some timeshe was united in marriage to Bishop Ezra Martin. She took a strokesix years ago last November, and since that time has been confinedto her home. She proved to be a patient mother, thought she neverhad children of her own. She died Feb. 25, 1938, and was laidto rest on the 28th at the Conestoga church and burying ground,where a very large assembly gathered to pay a last tribute ofrespect. She leaves the aged husband, 1 brother (Thomas, ministerat Markham), and many other near relatives. The services at thechurch were conducted by the home minister, Israel Weber, andDaniel G. Brubaker, bishop at Brutus, Mich. May God richly comfortall the bereaved friends.

Nafziger - Katie, daughter of Chris D. and MagdalenaShort was born near Archbold, O., Oct. 7, 1867; died ather home near Archbold; aged 70 y. 4 m. 25 d. On Mar. 6, 1890,she was united in marriage to Simon Nafziger. They shared thejoys and sorrows of life together until Feb. 21, 1931, when Godcalled him home. To this union were born 10 children. She leaves3 sons (Clarence, Eddie, and Lyle), 2 daughters (Mrs. Eli Stuckelyand Emma) all of Archbold, O., 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren,2 sisters (Mrs. A.J. Wyse, who is seriously ill at this time,and Mrs. Harry Lauther, who after the death of her parents madeher home with Bro. and Sister Nafziger for 8 years), and a hostof relatives and friends. Her husband, 3 daughters, 2 sons, 1grandchild, 2 sisters (Fannie and Lydia) and I brother (Albert)preceded her in death. She was a kind and loving mother and willbe missed in the home and by all that knew her. But our loss isher eternal gain.
"Remember, friend, as you pass by,
As you are now, so once was I;
As I now am, so you shall be.
Prepare for death and follow me."

Wyse - Sarah R., daughter of C.D. and Magdalena Short,was born near Archbold, O., July 31, 1872; following a short illnesscaused by cancer, she died at the home of her birth, Mar. 9, 1938;aged 65 y. 7 m. 8 d. On Mar. 31, 1892, she was united in marriageto A.I. Wyse and they shared the joys and sorrows of life togetherfor nearly 46 years. This union was blessed with 4 sons and 1daughter (Chauncey, Boy, and Amandus of Detroit, Mich.; Harryand Mrs. P.L. Frey of Archbold, Ohio). She is survived by herlate husband, 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 1 sister (Mrs. HarryLauber of Archbold, Ohio). These together with a host of relativesand friends remain to mourn her departure. In her youth she acceptedChrist as her Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church, towith faith she remained true until death. She was a loving motherand a devoted companion, always looking for the welfare of others;one who had many friends and will be greatly missed in the home,in the Church, and in the community.
"Her willing hands are folded, her dear, warm heart isstill;
A place is vacant in the home that never can be filled."

Martin - Norman R. Martin died at his home in Elmira,Ont., March 30, 1938; after a brief illness at the age of 44 y.1 m. 4 d. Feb. 20, 1918, he was united in marriage to Altana Weber.Three children were blessed to this union; namely, Willis, Grace,and Verda, who deeply mourn his early departure. He is also survivedby his father and step-mother (his own mother preceded him 30years ago), 7 brothers (Josiah and Urias of Kitchener, Irvineand Edison of Alberta, Isaiah of Petersburg, Abner of New Hamburg,Ephraim and Milton of Albany, Oreg.), 3 sisters (Hannah, wifeof Irvine Lichty of Breslau; Malinda, wife of Amos Good of NewHamburg; Barbara, wife of Moses Roth of Baden), 1 step-brother(Melvin Hunsberger of New Hamburg), and 1 step-sister (Ada, wifeof Rufus Martin of St. Jacobs). One sister (Elvina) preceded him8 years ago. He accepted Christ as his Saviour in his youth andunited with the Mennonite Church in which he served faithfullyto the end. Some of his last comforting words were, "It iswell with my soul." Funeral services were held April 3, incharge of Bros. Ben Shantz and Oliver D. Snider. Text, Isa. 51:12first clause. Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

God took him home; it was His will, but in our hearts he livethstill."

Hershberger - Sophia, daughter of Leonard and Kathryn(Eash) Emmert, was born Mar. 15, 1864; died at her homenear Shipshewana, Ind., Mar. 24, 1938; aged 74 y. 9 d. On Feb.6, 1887 she was united in marriage to Ephraim Swartzentruberwho died Feb. 22, 1902. To this union were born 2 sons and 5 daughters.One son and 1 daughter preceded her to the spirit world. On Oct.25, 1908 she was united in marriage to Noah Hershberger of HolmesCo., Ohio, who died June 30, 1917. She leaves 1 son (John of Topeka),4 daughters (Susan, Mrs. John Hershberger, Orrville, O.; Fanny,Mrs. James Mason, Elkhart, Ind.; Amanda, Mrs. Jonas Eash, Elkhart,Ind.; Katie, at home), 21 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren,4 stepchildren, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers. She was a member ofthe Mennonite Church since her youth. She had been failing inhealth for several years, but she bore her suffering patiently,and was waiting to be called to that better home where there isno pain or sorrow. Mother is gone She can never come back to us,but oh! the blessed thought that we can all go to her; for weknow that she is waiting to welcome us over there. Funeral serviceswere held at the Shore Mennonite Church, conducted by Amos Hostetlerand Josiah J. Miller. Text, Heb. 4:12.
"Passing out of the shadow into eternal day;
Why do we call it dying, this sweet going away."

Cook - William A., son of Washington and Ann Jane Cook,was born Nov. 13, 1866, in Hardy Co., O.; died Mar. 21, 1938,at the Mercy Hospital in Urbana, Ill.; aged 71 y. 4 m. 21 d. Hisdeath was caused by a diabetic illness. In 1868, he came to Illinoiswith his parents, who settled near Dewey, where he spent the restof his life. On Nov. 26, 1885, he was united in marriage to SarahKatherine Chambers, who with seven of the ten children survive.The children surviving are: Mrs. Lyle Hummel, Arvada, Colo.; Mrs.Iva Spicer, Fisher, Ill.; Alva, Rankin, Ill.; Archie, Walter,Eddie, and Mrs. Rose Drennan, Dewey, Ill. Pearl, Leslie and Frankpreceded him in death. Also surviving are a brother (George, ofBantry, N. Dak.), and a sister (Mrs. Margaret Hatherway of Hume,Ill.), 28 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren Five grandchildrenpreceded him in death. Bro. Cook was a hard worker, and spentalmost all his time in accumulation of earthly gains for himselfand family; until about six months ago, when his health failedand he was taken to the hospital. Here he was visited by our minister,Bro. J.A. Heiser who instructed him in the Word of God. Afterconfessing Christ he was baptized and received into the fellowship.Funeral services were conducted from the family home March 26,with Bro. J.A. Heiser officiating. Text, Jno. 14:6. Burial inthe nearby cemetery.
"Dear husband and father, you have left us,
And your going we deeply feel;
But 'tis God who has bereaved us,
He can all our sorrows heal."

Groff - John L., youngest son of John and Anna (Brackbill)Groff, was born Apr. 12, 1916, near Kinzers, Pa.; died Feb. 26,1938, at the Lancaster General Hospital; aged 21 y. 10 m. 14 d.On Feb. 24 he left his parents, said good-bye, never thinkingit would be the last time to meet here on earth. He was returningfrom his fiancee's home and met with an automobile accident whichresulted in his death two days later. His passing has been a shockto his family, his community, and the many friends who learnedto know and love him for his kind and loving disposition and hischeery smile. He is sadly missed by us all and can never be replaced.We cannot understand why he has been taken in his young and activelife, but God's ways are higher than our ways and He makes nomistakes. At the age of 15 he united with the Kinzers MennoniteChurch and was a faithful attendant at church and Sunday schoolat that place. He leaves his sorrowing parents, his fiancee, PaulineBredle, Goodville, Pa., and the following brothers and sisters:Barbara (wife of Warren Graham), Gap, Pa.; Clarence V., and RoyM., Groff of Kinzers; Anna (wife of Norman Hess), and Elva (wifeof Lester Lehman), Lancaster, Pa.; and Elizabeth, Esther, Elsie,and Miriam, at home. Grieser - Samuel D., son of Christian and Veronica Grieser,was born near Archbold, O. June 10, 1874; died at the MemorialHospital, Wauseon, O., Mar. 2, 1938; aged 63 y. 8 m. 20 d. On.Nov. 4, 1894, he was united in marriage to Emma Stutzman. Theyshared the joys and sorrows of life together until Nov. 2, 1919,when God called her home. This union was blessed with 7 children.He leaves 2 sons (Ira and Lawrence), 3 daughters (Bertha, Mrs.Joseph Gunden, Archbold, O.; Mrs. William Gunden of Bay Port,Mich.), 18 grandchildren, 4 brothers, 2 sisters, and a host ofrelatives and friends. There preceded him in death, his companion,1 daughter (who died in infancy) 1 son, 3 grandchildren, father,mother, and 1 sister. He united with the Mennonite Church at theage of 19 and was ordained to the ministry May 10, 1919, wherehe faithfully labored for the cause of Christ and the Church.We feel our loss, but our loss is his eternal gain. His deathwas due to a heart attack which took place after an appendicitisoperation.

Weaver - Mary Anna, daughter of Bishop William and Nancy(Landis) Acker, was born July 12, 1855, at Millerstown,Pa.; died Feb. 5, 1938, at Waynesboro, Va.; aged 82 y. 6 m. 24d. Death was due to pneumonia, caused by burns received when herclothing caught on fire at an open fireplace. She was united inmarriage to David J. Weaver Dec. 7, 1875, who preceded her indeath in 1924; as also a son (William H.) who died in 1937. Sheleaves the following children: Mrs. Vena Stover, Blooming Glen,Pa.; Annie (wife of Chas. Kolb), Spring City, Pa.; David N., ofWaynesboro, Va.; Maymie (wife of P.H. Harner), Waynesboro, Va.,at whose home she died; Amos B., Waynesboro, Va.; Margaret (wifeof Titus K. Moyer), Silverdale, Pa.; Jonas A., Royersford, Pa.;Ella (wife of Emanuel J. Burkholder) and Josephine (wife of AmosH. Burkholder), both of Harrisonburg, Va. She also leaves 38grandchildrenand 16 great-grandchildren. The following sisters also survive:Mrs. Sue Oberholtzer, New Holland, Pa.; Mrs. Lizzie Lauver,Mifflintown,Pa. At the age of twenty-three she with her companion united withthe Mennonite Church of which faith she died. She had a greatconcern for the young people of the Church, and as she had beena semi-invalid for a good many years, she enjoyed their visitsand singing. Funeral services were held Feb. 8, from HildebrandsChurch in Augusta, Co., Va., by Brethren, Jos. R. Driver and J.H.Weaver. Text, marked in her bible as follows: Psa. 17:15; 116:15;Mark 14:18.

He leaves his widowed mother,2 sons (Clarence and George) both at home, and 1 daughter (Rubyof Saskatoon). His father preceded him 17 years ago. He was sufferingmentally for some time, becoming worse and finally death came.Funeral services were conducted by M.H. Schmidt and B.B. Weberin the Sharon Mennonite Church. Benner - Lizzie, wife of John D. Benner was born Sept.3, 1863. She was a daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Derstine)Detweiler, being born in Montgomery Co., Pa. She unitedwith the Church at Rockhill at the age of twenty-one; marriedMarch 19, 1902 (being his second wife) by Bishop Josiah Clemmer.Her health failed for the last few years. She was forced to bedtwelve days prior to death on March 30, 1938, at her home. Funeralservices were held at the Souderton Church. Text, Rev. 14:13.Interment in the adjoining cemetery. Aged 74 y. 6 m. 27 d. Survivingbesides the husband is an adopted daughter, Alverda, wife of OswinF. Detweiler.

Merril - Lydia Buerge was born in Ontario, Canada, Feb.14, 1857; died March 15, 1938; aged 81 y. 1 m. 1 d. She movedwith her parents to Reed City, Mich., at the age of twelve years,and to a farm near Jasper, Mo., when a young woman. She becamea member of the Mennonite Church some twenty years ago. She wasmarried to George Merril in October, 1932, who passed away a littlemore than four months ago. She leaves 2 sisters (Bessie Buergeand Mrs. Jacob Scott), 4 nephews, and 2 nieces Funeral serviceswere conducted at the Baptist Church at Jasper, Mo., by E.J. Bekeryof Oronogo, Mo. Text, Psa. 116;15. Burial in Mitchel Cemeteryfour miles east of Jasper.

Martin - Enoch E. Martin died at his home at Floradale,Ont., April 5, 1938, after a brief illness, aged 73 y. He leaveshis wife and 3 sons (Oscar and Cleason of near Waterloo, Melvinat Floradale), 1 brother (Daniel of St. Jacobs), 3 sisters (Mrs.Simeon Weber of Conestoga, Mrs. Moses Martin of Elmira, Mrs. AbramMartin of Heidelberg). He was a faithful and active member ofthe Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held April 8, in chargeof Bro. Jonas Snider of Waterloo (Text, Phil. 3:20, 21), afterwhich a song in which the deceased loved to dwell: "Deathshall not destroy my comfort," etc. After this Bro. O.D.Snider spoke from II Tim. 4:6 last clause. The remains were laidto rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Histand - Rhoda, daughter of Fannie (Good) and the lateAbram L. Histand, died at her home, Doylestown, Pa., March 9,1938; aged 8 y. 3 m. 19 d. After the death of her father a yearago, she with her mother and brother moved to her grandparentsnear E. Petersburg, Pa. She leaves her mother, 1 brother, 4grandparents,1 sister preceding her in death. She was an invalid most of herlife, but always was of a cheerful disposition. About 2 yearsago she became bedfast and almost helpless. Her body was weakerand she quietly passed away. Funeral services were held at herlate home Friday evening, with further services at DoylestownMarch 12, Bros. Joseph Gross and John Gochnauer officiating. Intermentin adjoining cemetery.

Horning - Glen, son of Lewis G. and Dora Horning, wasborn Feb. 8, 1935; died at the home of his parents in Hinkletown,Pa., April 3, 1938. We humbly submit ourselves and say, "Thywill be done," though we miss our little Glenn very much.He was a bright and loving child, much of the time while playinghe was singing. Just one day before his took sick he sang, "Whatthe world needs is Jesus." In his play he would sometimessay, "Mother, I am sorry; I will be good." He is survivedby his parents, 2 grandfathers and 1 great-grandmother. Funeralservices were held at the home by Bro. John W. Weaver and at WeaverlandChurch by Bros. John M. Sauder and I.B. Good.

Surviving are his wife (Charlotte),2 daughters (Mrs. Ida Schields of Dodson, Mont., and Mrs. ClaraBusch of Guernsey, Sask.), 6 sons (Dr. Angus Ernst of Watrons,Sask.; Ira, David, and Herbert of Guernsey, Sask.; Lorne and Stanleyof Plunkett), 2 brothers (Henry and George of Elmira, Ont.), and1 step-sister, Mrs. Lovina Brubacker of St. Jacobs, Ont. About2 years ago he suffered a stroke and has since been in poor health,confined to his bed since last November. Funeral services wereconducted March 10 at the Sharon Mennonite Church by M.H. Schmitt.Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Kropf - Lorene, daughter of Clarence and Mary Kropfwas born Aug. 1, 1917, near Hubbard, Oreg.; died March 11, 1938,at her home near Woodburn, Oreg.; aged 20 y. 7 m. 11 d. Survivingare her father, 1 sister (Mrs. John Hershberger of Woodburn),5 brothers (Herman of Harrisburg, Milo, Leland, Lawrence and Delbertof Woodburn), besides many relatives and friends. She acceptedher Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church in her youth,where she continued faithful and gave her willful service. Shebore her affliction patiently, knowing that these "are notworthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed inus." She will be missed in the home, but we will comfortourselves in the promises of Him who is faithful, confident thatHe will supply our every need. Services were conducted by PaulN. Blough - Polly, daughter of the late David and Fannie(Wingard) Weaver, was born Nov. 20, 1862; died March 23,1938; aged 75 y. 4 m. 3 d. She was united in marriage to PeterBlough Jan. 18, 1880, who preceded her in death about ten yearsago. To this union were born 7 children, 5 of whom survive, asfollows: Ammon, Alvin, Fannie (wife of Lemon Saylor), Jennis (wifeof Edgar L. Saylor), and Ella (wife of Webster Thomas). Two childrenpreceded her in death (Sadie, wife of Lawrence Spiegle who diedabout 20 years ago; and Ida, who died in April 28, 1894), 22grandchildrenand 12 great-grandchildren also survive; also 2 brothers (Danielof Elmdale, Mich., and Moses, of Davidsville). Sister Blough wasbaptized and taken into the Mennonite Church Sept. 1908, and continuedfaithful unto death. Funeral services were held at the home andat the church by the home ministers, H.C. Blough and John A. Lehman,after which the body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Zehr - Christian S. Zehr of Wellesley, Ont., was bornDec. 25, 1864; died March 1, 1938; aged 73 y. 2 m. 6 d. He wasunited in marriage, Jan. 26, 1886, to Mattie Wagler who passedaway June 25, 1928. To the above union was born 1 son (Aaron W.Zehr). He was again united in marriage, Oct. 22, 1929, to KatieSteckly. He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour in his youthand was ordained to the ministry on June 7, 1891, in which fieldhe labored faithfully till the end. He is survived by his sorrowingcompanion, 1 son, 1 adopted daughter (Mrs. Mose Erb, Zurich, Ont.),and 1 step-daughter (Martha, at home); also 5 grandchildren, 2brothers (Jacob S., of Poole, Ont., and M.S. Zehr, of Pigeon,Mich.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Barbara Zehr and Mrs. Peter Leichty).Funeral services were held at the home by John Wagler and at theMaple View Amish Mennonite Church by Bros. Dan Lebold, Dan Jutzi,and Chris Schultz.

Miller - Adam, son of Jeptha and Barbara Miller, wasborn in Holmes Co., Ohio, Oct. 7, 1867; died at his home at Emma,Ind., March 18, 1938; aged 70 y. 5 m. 11 d. On April 6, 1891,he was united in marriage with Anna, daughter of Andrew and SarahYoder. To this union were born 11 children (Clarence, Lawrenceand Isak Schrock of Shipshewana; Sarah Treesch of Plymouth, Ind.;Ira, Amasa, and Lester of Goshen). One daughter and 3 infantspreceded him in death. Besides the immediate family, he also leaves19 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 1foster grandchild, 1 half-brother (Noah Spicher of Shipshewana),1 half-sister (Mrs. Silas Garver of Kokomo, Ind.), and other relativesand friends. In his early life he united with the ConservativeMennonite Church, of which he was a member at the time of hisdeath. Services were held at the Conservative Mennonite Church.Sermon by Samuel T. Eash and Oscar S. Hostetler. Burial in thenearby cemetery.

Weideman - Mary Wilhelmina, daughter of Erdman and HenrietteMoench, was born near Gutenberg, Iowa, Dec. 18, 1863; diedat her home at Manson, Iowa, April 4, 1938; aged 74 y. 3 m. 16d. On March 20, 1880, she was married to Charles Weideman whosurvives her. To this union were born 12 children, 7 of whom survive,as follows: Mrs. Etta Anderson of Pomeroy, Ia.; Otto, of FortDodge, Ia.; Mrs. Tillie Miller os Saegerstown, Pa.; Mrs. EllaRasmusson, Mrs. Many Rasmusson, John, and Bert, all of Manson,Is. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren,and 1 sister (Mrs. Henrietta Loots of Manson). One son (Fred)died in October, 1`923, and 1 sons and 3 daughters died in earlychildhood. She lived all of her married life in or near Manson,with the exception of 17 years, residing 4 years in Mitchell Co.,Ia., and 13 years in North Dakota, At an early age she becamea Christian, uniting with the Evangelical Church Later (Dec. 6,1914) she transferred her membership to the mennonite Church.She had comparative good health during most of her life untilNov. 13, 1937, when she suffered a paralytic stroke. From thissee seemed to be steadily recovering. Death was caused by occlusionof a blood vessel. throughout her illness she realized the seriousnessof her condition, and expressed full resignation to the divinewill. Funeral services were conducted April 8, by Bro. Nick Stoltzfus.Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Yoder - Eri E., second child of John and Elizabeth Byler,was born Sept. 10, 1851, near Belleville, Pa.; died March 26,1928, at her home in Goshen, Ind., after a lingering illness froma stroke of paralysis; aged 86 y. 6 m. 16 d. She accepted theChristian faith as an early age and remained a faithful memberof the Mennonite Church. She was married March 6, 1879, to RufusA. Yoder of West Liberty, Ohio. To this union were born 3 daughters(Mary, Anna, and Kathryn). her husband died Jan. 22, 1896, andin February, 1908, her daughter Kathryn died very suddenly atGoshen College while attending school. In September, 1908, withher mother and her daughter Anna, she moved to Goshen, Ind., wheremany students found in her an inspiring friend and helper. In1900, when foreign mission work was still very new in the MennoniteChurch, she gave every encouragement to her daughter Mary, whowas called to go to India as a missionary. later her home becamethe home of the three grandchildren of missionary parents to whichthey have ever since turned as home with the greatest love anddevotion. Surviving her are her two daughters (Mary Burkhard andAnna Yoder), 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a widecircle of relatives and friends to whom she endeared herself.Funeral services were held at the Eighth Street Mennonite Churchconducted by the Paster George S. Stoneback and M.C. Lehman. Text,John 14:1-4. "In my Father's house are many mansions."

Ray - Virgie, daughter of Bro. Martin and Nettie Conley,was born July 4, 1910; died Mar. 5, 1938; aged 27 y. 8 m. 1 d.She united with the Mennonite Church in early life, but wanderedaway from the fold. Several weeks prior to her death she was restored.Funeral services were held from the Gospel Hill Church, conductedby Brethren C.K. Lehman and L.H. Jones. Miller - John A. Miller died Feb. 16, 1938, at the homeof his son, Albert E. Miller of Berlin, Pa.; aged 88 y. 9 m. 26d. He is survived by his son Albert E. Miller, Mrs. Manda Walkerof Somerset, Nelson B. Miller of Johnstown, Luman E. Miller ofHouston, Tex., Jacob E. Miller of Salix, Pa., Mrs. Sarah Combeckerof Somerset, Effie V. Wood of Somerset, and Moxham M. Miller ofSan Diego, Calif. Funeral services were held at the home, in chargeof Bro. Sanford G. Shetler.

Martin - Robert Nyle, beloved son of Oscar and EdnaMartin, died suddenly April 6, 1938; aged 3 y. 3 m. 14 d. Robertwas sick only a day. Surviving are his parents and 2 brothers(Roy and Morris). Funeral services were conducted at the Erb St.Mennonite Church, Waterloo, Ont., by Bros. Jonas Snider and J.B.Martin. The body was laid to rest in the David Eby Cemetery.

Grabil - Lizzie Grabil was born in Gardner, Ill., Feb.9, 1857; died April 5, 1938; aged 81 y. 1 m. 26 d. On Jan. 1,1877, at Chatsworth, Ill., she was united in marriage to S.W.Shearer, who passed away in May, 1923. To this union were born10 children. Six of ten survive: Byron, Russel, and Weslie ofJackson, Minn.; Harry of Freeborn; Charlie of St. Paul, and Mrs.Mary Harder of Upland, Calif. There also remain 34 grandchildrenand 6 great-grandchildren; also a sister (Mrs. P.S. Snyder ofAshley, Mich.). In early womanhood she united with the MennoniteChurch, of which she was a faithful member until her death. Shewas much concerned about the soul's welfare of her children, oftenasking friends in letters written, an interest of prayer in theirbehalf. Funeral services were held at the old home place and atthe church by Bros. N.E. Landis and C.J. Garber. Interment inRiverside Cemetery, Jackson.

Wingard - Levi J. Wingard was born July 6, 1860; diedApril 12, 1938, aged 77 y. 9 m. 6 d. He was a son of Jacob J.and Polly (Eash) Wingard, both deceased. He is survived by hiswife (Susannah Baumgardner Wingard) and the following children:Ralph, married to Emma Hostetler; Elizabeth, married to Ray Parker;Mahlon; Suie; Harvey, married to Mary Hostetler; and Algie. Heis also survived by 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, andthe following half-brothers and half-sisters: Christie Miller,Jenny Graybill, Alice Hummel, Katie, Emma Frederick, Hiram, Elias,and John. He was preceded in death by 1 sister (Anna, wife ofL.A. Blough), and 2 half-sisters (Louisa and Lucinda) and 1half-brother(Simon). He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for46 years. Funeral services at the home and church were in chargeof Bros. Sanford G. Shetler and Alex. Weaver. Interment in theRichland Cemetery.

Sala - Emma, daughter of the late Samuel and Sally (Yoder) Mishler, was born Feb. 16, 1893; died at her home Jan.22, 1938; aged 44 y. 11 m. 6 d. She was united in marriage toAmmon Sala Feb. 8, 1919. To this union were born 4 children: EmmaBeatrice, who preceded her in death, Robert Paul, Ammon Jr., andBernie Marie, all at home. Besides her husband and 3 children,she is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs.Jacob Croyle near Davidsville, Mrs. Polly Baumgardner of Kelson,Mrs. Elmer Hoffman near Scalplevel, Mrs. Andrew Kaufman, nearKelson, Levi Mishler near Davidsville, Mrs. Ada Blough of TireHill, and Walter Mishler of near Davidsville, Pa. She was precededin death by 1 sister (Lydia) and 1 brother (John). She unitedwith the Stahl Mennonite Church in 1912 and was a faithful memberuntil death. The funeral services at the home and church werein charge of Bros. Sanford G. Shetler and Harry C. Blough, withinterment in the Stahl Cemetery.

Broadwater - Harvey P. Broadwater was born in GarretCo., Md., April 4, 1866; died Feb. 12, 1938, aged 71 y. 10 m.17 d. He was united in marriage to Dorcas Ellen Broadwater Feb.22, 1889. To this union were born 11 children. He leaves his wifeand the following children: Mrs. Floyd Rounds, James Broadwater,Mrs. Thomas Wilt, Mrs. Bertha Hare, Mrs. Jerry Durst, and Edward,Albert, Jack, and Oma at home; also 36 grandchildren, 4great-grandchildren,4 brothers and 1 sister. Two children, 1 brother, and 1 sisterpreceded him to the spirit world. At his request, he was receivedinto church fellowship with the Fairview Mennonite Church by waterbaptism Jan. 31, 1938. Although greatly afflicted, he bore hissuffering with patience and expressed satisfaction in his new-foundChristian life. Funeral services at the home were in charge ofBro. Sanford G. Shetler of Johnstown, Pa., and at the church byBrethren Sanford G. Shetler, M.B. Miller, and Roy L. Kinsinger.

Sensenig - Katie W. (Martin), wife of Martin Sensenig,was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., July 4, 1865; died March 24, 1938,at her home near Blue Ball, Pa., after a year's illness fromcomplications.She was thirty-one weeks in bed. She was a member of the WeaverlandMennonite Church. Besides her husband, she is survived by 1 fosterdaughter (Mary, wife of Aaron Z. Hoover, at home), 2 sisters (Mrs.Lizzie Martin, of East Earl and Mrs. Amos Sensenig of Weaverland),1 foster brother (Abram Zimmerman of Ephrata) and 5 fostergrandchildren.Funeral services were conducted March 27 at the home by Bro. GeorgeGood at the house and Bros. John M. Sauder, John W.Weaver, andAaron Weaver at the church. Text, Rev. 22:14. Interment in theadjoining cemetery.

A foster daughter

Shenk - Mrs. Susannah Shenk was born July 20, 1849;died Feb. 9, 1938; aged 88 y. 6 m. 19 d. She is survived by herson (Peter Shenk of Salix, Pa., with whom she had made her homefor many years), and the following grandchildren: Mrs. Mable Hostetler,Mrs. Florence Luther, Salis; Floyd Shenk of Scalp Level, and 4great-grandchildren. Her husband, Samuel Shenk, to whom she wasunited in marriage in 1867, died 26 years ago. Sister Shenk unitedwith the Mennonite Church in 1867 and was a faithful and devotedmember of the Mennonite Church until death. She was for many yearsa member of the Pleasant Grove congregation, and though physicallyhandicapped for the last number of years that church attendancewas impossible, she always maintained an active interest in thework of the congregation and had a concern for the Lord's work.Her passing has left a vacancy which can only be filled by pleasantmemories of her deep Christian experience. Funeral services atthe home were in charge of Hiram Wingard and at the church byBro. Hiram Wingard and Bro. Sanford G. Shetler.

Miller - Mattie, daughter of Daniel and Fanny (Roth)Bender, was born in Ontario, Feb. 7, 1860; died at thehome of her daughter Fannie near Goshen, Ind., Apr. 5, 1938; aged77 y. 3 m. 28 d. In her youth she came with her parents to ElkhartCo., Ind., where she spent the rest of her days. She united withthe Amish Church in early life. In this faith she lived and died.On Oct. 27, 1881, she was united in marriage to Benedict Miller.To this union 5 children were born. Bro. Miller died Feb. 23,1893. After spending 17 years in widowhood she was again marriedto Bishop Jacob H. Miller April 5, 1910, whose companionship sheshared a few days more than 3 years and again she was left a widow.In this state she spent many days in caring for the sick and needy.One son and 1 daughter preceded her in death. She leaves 1 son(Cephas of Kalona, Ia.), 2 daughters (Lydia, wife of Levi J. Millerof Middlebury, Ind., and Fannie, wife of David S. Miller of Goshen,Ind.), 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 4 brothers and manyother relatives and friends. Funeral services at the home of herson-in-law, David S. Miller, where she had her home for a numberof years, by Menno Schrock and Nathaniel Miller in German andD.J. Johns in English.

Brunner - Ethel Mae, daughter of Emanuel and Barbara(Sutter) Zehr, was born June 10, 1912, near Hopedale, Ill.;died at the St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Ill., April 1, 1938;aged 25 y. 9 m. 22 d. On March 30 she and her sister Lylia werereturning home from a visit with their sister, Leah Guth of Flanagan,Ill. They were about four miles east of Morton, Ill., when thetornado lifted their car from the road and threw them into a field.Her death occurred two days later from severe injuries receivedat this time. She accepted Christ as her Saviour in her youthand became a member of the Hopedale Mennonite Church. At the timeof her death she was an active member of the Pleasant Grove MennoniteChurch near Tremont. June 8, 1935, she was married to John W.Brunner of Tremont, Ill. She is survived by her sorrowing husband,her parents, and the following sisters and brother: Lena Guth,Flanagan, Ill.; Lylia Ripper of Morton, Ill.; Emma Litwiller ofDelavan, Ill.; Alma Zehr and Albert Zehr of Hopedale, Ill.; alsoher aged grandmother (Mrs. Fannie Sutter of Hopedale, Ill.) andmany more relatives and friends. The funeral services were heldApril 3 at the home of her parents south of Hopedale by Bro. LelandBachman of Goshen, Ind.; and at the Hopedale Mennonite Churchby Bros. Joe Davis and Simon Litwiller. Text, Psa. 87:3. Intermentin the Mennonite Church west of Hopedale.
